The Preacher’s Daughter
There are moments in sports when an athlete reminds us why we fell in love with them in the first place. For fight fans around the world, that athlete has always been Holly Holm. She’s been called many things throughout her career “The Preacher’s Daughter,” “The Ronda Rousey Slayer,” “The Veteran Warrior.” But on Saturday, August 30, she reminded us of the most important title of all: America’s Sweetheart of Combat Sports.
Holly Holm has built a career on showing up when the world least expects it. Before her rise in MMA, fans sometimes forget she was already a superstar in two other sports. In boxing, she amassed a record of 33 wins and only 2 losses, becoming one of the most decorated women in the sport’s history. In kickboxing, she was flawless 6 and 0. And then came her leap into MMA, where she carved out a record of 15 wins and 7 losses, facing some of the toughest names in the game Amanda Nunes, Kayla Harrison, and of course, Ronda Rousey, the fight that sent shockwaves through the world with a head kick that broke the internet and etched Holm’s name into history.
What makes Holly Holm so special isn’t just her resume. It’s her heart.
That heart was on full display at RAF 01, when a highly anticipated wrestling match between Kennedy Blades and Alejandra Rivera was suddenly at risk of being scrapped due to complications. The crowd was restless, the energy uncertain, and then came the announcement from Eric Boshoff: there was a surprise in store.
When Holly Holm walked out from the back, the arena erupted. On just one day’s notice, in her 40s, and stepping outside her usual realm of MMA, Holm did the unthinkable: she took on Rivera — a high-level wrestler — in a wrestling match that no one thought she’d accept.
And she didn’t just show up. She fought.
Round after round, Holm showcased the same grit that made her a boxing champion, a kickboxing champion, and a UFC world champion. She adapted, she scrambled, she fought her way into positions that had the wrestling crowd on their feet. When the dust settled, Rivera walked away with a 9–7 victory, but it was Holm who stole the night.
A Legacy of Showing Up
Holly Holm’s career has always been defined by moments of courage and connection with the fans. Whether shocking the MMA world with her knockout of Rousey, representing women’s combat sports on the biggest stages, or now stepping into wrestling against all odds, Holm continues to embody the spirit of a true champion.
She is more than a fighter. She is a role model. She is proof that greatness is about showing up when it matters most.
Holly Holm has reclaimed her crown as the American Sweetheart of Combat Sports.
